I spent the day yesterday in my kitchen dyeing up a storm! There was dye, silk and wool everywhere. It covered the bench, the sink, the stove and the microwave. Even the floor at one point! Ah, but where is the beauty if you can't have a little (lot) of mess first?

I even had a go at dyeing tencel, a man made fibre made from paper pulp that has the most amazing sheen when laid over wool. Hmmm, not sure if I'll do too much of this stuff as you need to use Procien MX dyes which I'm not a huge fan off. But we'll see when it dries off whether it is worth the hassle.

| mulberry silk, silk paj ribbon and fabric, merino wool |
The lightweight silk pajent was tie dyed in a nice rich silver with a hint of pink, this matched the rose pink silk ribbon, lavender and rose wool and lavender and rose mulberry silk. All ready for my newest nuno scarf. I actually ended up using the ribbon in another scarf as I felt this one had enough texture going on with the colour in the fabric.

Here the wool has been laid out over the silk fabric before wetting down, felting and fulling.

That scarf if beautiful. I like how you laid out the design before felting. I have only tried nuno felting a couple of times, so mine came out more of a mess. What is your favorite dye for wool? I have a bunch of wool that I want to dye, but I don't know what to use. I love making a mess while making beautiful things.
ReplyDeleteHi Janelle. Nuno felting can be a bit trial and error when first starting, but the effects you can get are worth the effort! I use very fine grade (18 mmom) Australian merino wool as it has very little if no scratch factor which is necessary for wearable garments. But any other fiber is fine if your using it for anything else. Making the mess is sometimes the best part! I use Jacquard acid dyes for my wools and silk plus Landscape dyes from Kraftcolour for their intensity. I am feeling a tutorial of dyeing your own wool coming on in the next few weeks which I will post on my web site.
DeleteBeautiful scarf, and a lot of work! The fabrics all look so gorgeous! Thanks for sharing the process! Hugs, Valerie

ReplyDeleteWow, you need tons of space to create a scarf like that, don't you? I had no idea how you created these works of art, looks like a very cool process! And all of those dyed fibers? Gorgeous! :) So glad you had fun 'playing'. :)
